The day started with a service at Sandomierz Cathedral, which featured choirs, historic costumes, military personnel representing the fight for independence, and Scouts and pupils honouring their country’s freedom.
Former Newark Town Councillor Jane Olson proposed a vote of thanks speech for
Laurence Goff, the Retiring Newark Town Mayor 14th May 2023.
A year ago I stood in this place, called to welcome our newly elected Town Mayor, Laurence Goff, confident then that he was set to make an excellent ambassador for the people of this town. But who could have known the level to which he would take his responsibilities and what an Annus Mirabilis it would be? Or indeed that Mayor Goff would be appointed the People’s Pin-up, his Mayoral Mural welcoming the visitors to the town on Castle Gate? Now a year on it fills me with pride to read the tributes written into the Newark Advertiser and on social media. But also some trepidation. What could I add that hasn’t already been said by so many in the town in celebration of Mayor Goff’s year?
A great Laurence of history once said: “Dream your dreams with open eyes and make them come true.” [T. E. Lawrence]
Our Laurence’s dream from 25 years ago did come true. Last year, after 17 years as a Councillor, he was voted by the sitting Council to become the Mayor for the 2022-2023 Civic Year. During the year that followed he has attended, a total which has been counted and verified, of 153 events. Some of his duties included taking part in local celebrations for The Platinum Jubilee, Civic Church Ceremonies, Street Parties and visits to care homes, the death of the Queen, the Proclamation of accession of Charles III and the Coronation. He personally took a book of Condolence to the care homes of Newark to enable residents to pay their respects following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
His mantle has taken him to Poland representing not only Newark but the UK for the Repatriation of the bodies of the three Polish Presidents in exile. He has received the Medal of the Minister of Culture, National Heritage and Sport “Guardian of National Memorial Sites” by the Polish Ambassador to the UK, a medal which will now be passed down to all future mayors on the mayoral chain. He opened the first Newark-on-sea event and presided over the first Newark Town Cycle Race to mention but a few.
A famous Laurence once said: “Have a very good reason for everything you do.” [Laurence Olivier]
Forner Councillor Jane Orton, former mayor’ Laurence Goff and Councillor Lisa Geary. Our Laurence has lived his life giving purpose to his past. His aim: to help those in need and signpost them from darkness to light. It came as little surprise to see on researching the name, Laurence, one meaning to be “bright or shining light” as he is a beacon of hope to many. Having spent a stint homeless in London during his youth he feels deeply for those who may find themselves in a similar situation and is determined to give them a positive outlook. During the year Laurence has raised over £1,300 (and counting) for each of his chosen charities, Newark Emmaus Trust and Sconce Hills Pre-School Playgroup. To quote another famous Laurence “When genuine passion moves you, say what you’ve got to say, and say it hot.” [D. H. Lawrence] So here goes…
What makes a town isn’t just its history, its buildings, its potholes – it’s the people that are the beating heart of any community. And with you as our Mayor, with your courage, conviction, tireless stamina, wholehearted commitment and presence you have been a tonic we have needed after a difficult few years. You’ve been an inspiration for the weakest of hearts after the difficult days of the pandemic. I stand before you today, Laurence Goff, to thank you for being a true mayor of the people. Our “Laurence of Newark” will go down in history. You have been, and I have no doubt, will continue to be, an inspiration to many. You have taught us to dream with our eyes open; that if we work hard and follow those dreams they can come true; that out of adversity comes truth and great strength;
If you’ll indulge me a moment longer I’d like to finish with an excerpt from a poem by another great literary Laurence:
To the boy at the high room window,
Gazing alone and apart,
There came a wish without reason,
A thought that shone through his heart.
I’ll choose this moment and keep it,
He said to himself, for a vow,
To remember forever and ever
As if it were always now. [Robert Laurence Binyon]
Laurence Goff: We Thank You for your devoted service to our town. You are our Great Laurence of now who has now, made history.

It was revealed he attended 153 events over the year, represented not only Newark but the UK in Poland, as well as raising more than £1,300 for his chosen charities.
She said: “What makes a town isn’t just its history or its potholes, it is the people.
“Laurence has been the tonic we’ve all needed after a difficult few years. He was a true mayor of the people.”
After quoting many great literary and historic Laurences, Jane added: “He is our Laurence of Newark, who will go down in history.”
There was a standing ovation, with the large audience rising to celebrate a remarkable mayor.
It was a moment that brought tears to the eyes of many guests, including the outgoing mayor himself.
Alongside his wife Jean, who he thanked for her support throughout his time as mayor, he was presented with his former mayor’s badge and flowers.
Laurence added: “It has been an honour and a privilege to be mayor of Newark, the heart of the town I am a member of.
“I’m grateful to have gone to Poland to represent the town, and I have had a lot of first events, as you can appreciate.
“I rode the [Brompton] bicycle over to Sconce Hills preschool, and yesterday I went to the county show.
“I would never have expected all these tributes in the paper and everywhere else, but I appreciate it, and I would like to thank Jane Olson for nominating me last year, and to all of the good people I’ve known over the years, thank you very much.” https://www.newarkadvertiser.co.uk/news/milestone-mayor-making-ceremony-held-9312651/
